Wimberley Wildlife and Your Pets

People come from all around to enjoy the natural beauty Wimberley has to offer. Living in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, and so close to nature, is a blessing for outdoor enthusiasts and their happy pets. However, it also means the possibility of encountering wildlife species that could pose a danger to your furry friends.

Venomous Snakes

Wimberley is home to a few venomous snake species, including rattlesnakes and copperheads. Pet owners should always be alert when walking dogs through wooded or grassy areas, especially during warmer months when snakes are more active. Consider looking into a “snake avoidance” class for your dog, or asking your vet about snake vaccines, for added protection.

Coyotes

Locals are used to hearing the eerie call of the coyotes at night. They are common in the Hill Country, and can be a real danger to pets, especially cats and small dogs. Always keep your pets indoors at night, and avoid leaving food outside, as this can attract predators. Having a secure, tall fence, and always supervising pets when they are outdoors can help prevent tragedy.

Scorpions and Fire Ants

Scorpions and fire ants are well know Central Texas nuisances. Be on the lookout for signs that your pet has been stung, and ask your vet for the best treatment options.

White-Tailed Deer

You can’t drive across Wimberley without seeing an abundance of White-Tailed Deer. While they are typically peaceful animals, mother deer, known as does, can become very protective of their fawns. If a deer feels its baby is threatened, it may react aggressively. Dogs, in particular, can provoke a defensive reaction from deer, and it’s not uncommon for a protective doe to stomp or charge at pets if she feels her fawn is in danger. Pet owners should avoid letting dogs off-leash in areas where deer are present, especially during the spring and summer months when fawns are young.
